Yorkshire Dales Marathon Challenge - Training Walk 1

The Hairy Hikers on Simon's Seat

Sunday 10th April 2011 - Simon's Seat

Hairy Hikers Present: Paul J, Stewart, Phil and Paul W

Start: Barden Bridge
Distance: 10.5 miles
Muffins provided by: Paul J
Vertical Waterfall Count: 1

The Route: From Barden Bridge we headed downstream following the path on the left bank of the River Wharfe. After a short while we headed into Strid Wood and followed the path until we came to a road. We headed up the road for a short distance to Waterfall Cottage and headed through a gate and up onto the moors. After a short while we had a glimpse of a waterfall on the left. Ignoring the path down to it we continued up the hill and crossed a footbridge, the path then brought us to a gate. We passed through the gate and headed right on a forest track leading uphill. After a while the trees gave way to open moorland.

We continued on the moorland path as it twisted and turned up towards our immediate destination, Simon's Seat. After a short while we reached a large outcrop of rock and the trig point of Simon's Seat. We stopped for a while and soaked up the fantastic views. We took the usual trig point photo and had a spot of lunch. At this point Stewart suggested an alternative route back and a short trip into Appletreewick to visit one of the two pubs for a quick pint. As the weather was gloriously hot and sunny we all agreed and headed off down on the path heading in the direction of Appletreewick.

After a steady decent we came to a farm track and headed left down it. Passing a cafe in a farmyard and resisting the lure of ice cream, we carried on until we reached a crossroads. We took the path on right and headed downhill. After a while we came to a road. We crossed over the road and headed right over a bridge and through a gate on the left. After crossing a stile we followed the path through a field and to the banks of the River Wharfe. We headed upstream following the signs to Appletreewick and after emerging onto the road, popped into the New Inn for a pint. We sat outside and enjoyed our pints of Daleside Blonde, which were perfect for a hot sunny day in April.

After supping up we retraced our steps back down the river and across the field to the road. Here we turned right back over the bridge and a short distance down the road we took a path on the right heading back towards the river. We followed the path downstream and after a while emerged back at Barden Bridge, where Stew, Paul W and Phil enjoyed ice creams from the roadside ice cream van.
